Announcing “500 Artisans, 500 Stories” — A 15th Anniversary Photo Project

To mark fifteen years since its founding, the Japanese denim brand KURO announces a photo project made in collaboration with photographer HIRO TANAKA.

Titled “500 Artisans, 500 Stories,” the project looks at the people and places behind KURO’s manufacturing as a single network — roughly five hundred artisans working across Japan. Through TANAKA’s lens, the largely unseen world of craftsmanship that sustains KURO comes vividly into view.

Since its founding, KURO has held the spirit of Made in Japan — the meeting of exceptional craft and unconstrained creative expression — at the core of its identity. In denim, a material that outlasts its era, KURO seeks to express the layering of time, creativity, and dialogue. What KURO makes is not simply clothing but a record of connection between people: evidence of the conversation between artisan and designer, between tradition and innovation.

HIRO TANAKA is a photographer known for capturing everyday life as it is, along with the quiet poetry within it. His work finds meaning in the moments where chance and intention intersect, drawing out the quieter rhythms of human presence. Internationally regarded, his photographs communicate breath, warmth, and atmosphere with an instinctive precision that goes beyond composition.

For this project, TANAKA has documented the artisans who give KURO’s garments their soul.
