About HIRO KIMURA

Born in 1977 and based in Tokyo. After graduating from the fashion department of Vantan Design Institute, he moved to the United States in 1999 and began working as a stylist. Back in Japan he styled advertising campaigns and shows at Tokyo Collection, then turned to photography in 2008, beginning his career under Kazumi Kurigami. He now works in Japan and abroad, largely on advertising, fashion and musicians, and in recent years has directed a great many television commercials and music videos. His photo books include CUVA (2015) and SINCERE. He is also known for HERO, a series of monochrome portraits.

From stylist to photographer

Someone who once chose the clothes and put them on the body now stands on the other side of the camera. For photographing denim, that history is not incidental. There are angles available only to someone who knows how a garment is built — how cloth falls, the moment a silhouette resolves, the way a material hands light back. That understanding is visible in the AW21 looks.
